The 12th Man [DVD]

What a movie. Seen it twice. Extraudinary tale of fortitude and resilience. They sure dont make them like that anymore…. Its a great movie.

Well, I can't understand it when people criticize a film simply for being in the Original Languages, in this case Norwegian and German rather than English because while it may be a struggle for some of the more uneducated reviewers here, it adds to the authenticity of the film. Why do so many British people EXPECT when they go abroad that Foreign Nationals in THEIR OWN country should speak English rather than the British learn a little of the language of the country THEY are visiting? Twelve Norwegians on a mission, discovered by a German Patrol Boat after a suspicious Norwegian felt it necessary to 'grass up' his countrymen. They scuttle their boat by blowing it up with the tons of TNT on board, Eleven are captured, one of whom is summarily executed and one, Jan Baalsrud (Thomas Gullestad) escapes - to a fashion. He is supported by the ordinary Norwegian peoples who help him try to reach neutral Sweden but not before he suffers from frostbite, gangrene, hunger and a general breakdown in health. He is protected by so many selfless Norwegians who put their own lives on the line at every step. Gullestad lost a tremendous amount of weight during the making of this TRUE STORY. Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays Gestapo Head Kurt Stage a Nazi fanatic who has never lost a single person allegedly involved in an action against the Germans. Gudrun Gronvoll (Marie Blokhus) protects Baalsrud and undoubtedly begins to have 'feelings' for him. The acting was very convincing down to the smallest role. Director Harald Zwart did a good job, the Cinematography was wonderful and the costumes of the time but the make up I thought was exceptional.

I'd seen a trailer for “The 12th Man” - it looked good, I thought, and it was a true story, I was told, so I bought a DVD of the film.Based around an incredible WWII commando mission in Nazi occupied Norway, the film does a good job of depicting the people (mainly civilians) that were involved.This is no short film, it couldn't be, if it is to give even a hint of a feeling of what went on and of the time that it took, but the two-hour-ten-minute film has too much repetition and too little variation to the story.With the exception of clothes that look too clean and ironed (having just come straight from the wardrobe department) to be believable as clothes worn by those involved (especially the German soldiers), with that ever-present problem of period dramas aside, everything else looks pretty convincing. Allegedly, lead actor Thomas Gullestad who plays Jan Baalsrud lost 33lbs in eight weeks for the role (that's over half-a-pound a day) and ended up with frost damage after being exposed to minus thirty degrees centigrade temperatures. Also lead Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Myers had to learn his German lines in two months and he doesn't normally speak German. So plenty of commitment from some of the actors, but as the really impressive thing about the story is that it actually happened, and once you are aware of that (and one is told at the start of the film what the outcome is) there is then a danger of the film becoming tedious. The audience is presented with a number of on screen statements saying that Jan Baalsrud has been in “this location” for “x” amount of time so that it doesn't become even more tedious.I think a good film has been made given the constraints of the story (since a great deal of the time there was very little happening other than waiting and a bit more waiting), but if you know the story then a two-hour film needs more happening in it to make more “entertaining” (as the trailer had suggested) and less “documentary-esque”.I know not to give too much significance to trailers when I watch them, but the trailer I saw for this film suggested a different film than the one I watched.Jan Baalsrud's story and that of the civilians involved is a story that deserves to be told, and I applaud all those involved for having made the film.(Three-and-a-half stars out of five.)On the DVD (ASIN: B07KH1FH1L)“The 12th Man” (2 hours 10 minutes)Scene SelectionSet Up: 5.2 Surround, 2.1 StereoEnglish Subtitles are available, they are embedded and are not optional.

Great DVD delivered promptly and we'll packed

- The beginning starts with most of the commando team being captured after an unsuccessful operation while the main protagonist pulls a near-death escape only surviving due to the goodwill of local civilians.- Fight that should be happening at the beginning because it precedes the beginning of the movie and to grab the viewer's attention is shown near the end of the movie during flashbacks while the main protagonist sleeps in a cave, where he is being cared for by Norway resistance that seems to be just normal people don't giving up on sole survivor of unsuccessful operation at this point just trying to escape to Sweden.- When the main protagonist after a prolonged struggle nearly escapes from Norway to Sweden, the sled connected to a reindeer following heard of raindeers (using the fact that these animals seasonally pass borders) disconnects from the sky sled in front of the Nazi border guard tower after which the main protagonist strapped to the sky sled somehow still manages to go down the slope on it own and hide behind a boulder while Nazi border guards approaching...At the last moment, his reindeer animal towing slave return before the main protagonist shoots himself to prevent being captured by Nazi guards and tows him behind the next hill and some across the border while Nazi border guards fail to hit the reindeer or main protagonist towed by this heroic animal before being out of the line of sight due to elevation even though Nazi border guards got both rifles and automatic submachineguns firing on less than 50m where need to lead shot should be non-existent against something as slow as reindeer towing a sky sled.So, at this point, you may think that this movie has as much in common with reality as Marvel's Captain America also situated in the WW2 conflict. The issue is that this movie trying to present this silly scene with a serious face and emotional music as if that was a way it could possibly ever happen, despite the rest of the movie is fairly solid with good cinematography and sufficient budget for a few computer-enhanced action scenes presented...

There is nothing to dislike unless one does not like the reliability of War and the heroes in them

A true story and gripping… the suspense hold you to the seat throughout the whole movie

Geschildert werden die wahren Ereignisse der legendären Flucht, die Jan Baalsrud verwundet auf sich nehmen musste. Die einzige Unterstützung hatte der 1917 geborene Norweger damals durch die Zivilbevölkerung erhalten, die in seiner Flucht eine Art Widerstand gesehen hatte, der sie alle Mut schöpfen ließ.Dies unterscheidet »The 12th Man – Kampf ums Überleben« erheblich von vielen anderen Kriegsfilmen, die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs spielen. Es ist kein üblicher Kriegsfilm, bei dem die einzelnen Kämpfe im Vordergrund stehen, sondern er schildert auf teils bedrückende Art und Weise, wozu Menschen fähig sein können – sowohl in negativer Hinsicht am Beispiel der Folter durch die Gestapo als auch in positiver Hinsicht durch die mutige Flucht des Jan Baalsrud und die Unterstützung durch die norwegische Zivilbevölkerung, die ständig vor Augen haben musste, dass man sie für die Unterstützung des Attentäters hinrichten könnte.THOMAS GULLESTAD wurde 1980 in Oslo geboren und ist als Norweger natürlich prädestiniert, deren Helden des Zweiten Weltkriegs zu spielen. Er steht seit 2010 für verschiedene norwegische Produktionen vor der Kamera und ist mir nicht weiter bekannt, hat sich in Norwegen aber wohl als Rapper einen Namen gemacht. Seine Rolle als Jan Baalsrud füllt er sehr überzeugend aus und lässt ihn auch nicht unnötig als Superman mit übermenschlichen Kräften erscheinen. Vielmehr gelingt es ihm, den Zuschauer mitbangen zu lassen. Man leidet förmlich mit der von ihm gespielten Figur.JONATHAN RHYS MEYERS ist hingegen der mehrfach ausgezeichnete Schauspieler von internationalem Renommee. Erstmals aufgefallen ist er mir einst in »From Paris with Love« (2010) als Filmpartner von John Travolta, später hatte ich ihn noch in der TV-Miniserie »Dracula« (2013 bis 2014) in der Titelrolle gesehen. Für seine Rolle in »Die Tudors« (2007 bis 2010) ist der 1977 in Dublin geborene Ire zweimal für den Golden Globe nominiert worden. In »The 12th Man – Kampf ums Überleben« glänzt er in der Rolle des unaussprechlich Bösen – in der Verkörperung des Sturmbannführers Kurt Stage, KdS (Kommandant der Sicherheitspolizei und des Sicherheitsdienstes).»The 12th Man – Kampf ums Überleben« hat es überhaupt nicht nötig, auf unnötige Gewaltszenen zurückzugreifen. Die Produktion fand an Originalschauplätzen in Schottland und Norwegen statt und bietet dem Zuschauer eine Fülle unbeschreiblich schöner Landschaftsaufnahmen – so man denn auf Eis und Schnee steht. Und eben diese Kulisse ist es, die dem Film ihre Spannung aufdrückt. Es ist weniger die Gefahr, der Gestapo in die Hände zu fallen, denn vielmehr, die unwirtliche Landschaft Norwegens im Winter nicht zu überleben.Erfrierungen, Entbehrungen, die Einsamkeit in der weißen Hölle, dies sind die Hauptproblematiken, mit denen sich der verletzte Norwegen Baalsrud herumplagen muss. Dabei erlebt man als Zuschauer immer wieder beinah körperlich mit, was der Held wider Willen zu durchleiden hat. Es beginnt schon am Anfang des Films, wenn in seiner Nähe eine Granate hochgeht und man plötzlich nur noch alles gedämpft hört, mit einem schrillen Pfeifen im Ohr – als wäre man unmittelbar dabei gewesen.Wer sich für historische Dramen interessiert, der wird um »The 12th Man – Kampf ums Überleben« vermutlich nicht herumkommen. Mir hat er definitiv sehr gut gefallen, was vor allem an den schauspielerischen Leistungen liegt. Erwähnenswert ist auch, dass Jonathan Rhys Meyers überhaupt kein Deutsch konnte und seine Sätze binnen zweier Monate lernen musste.●●●●●●●●●● MEINE MEINUNG ZUR BLU-RAY ●●●●●●●●●●Die Blu-ray steht in einer herkömmlichen Amaray-Hülle mit Wendecover ohne FSK-Logo.Die Navigation durch das Menü gestaltet sich als sehr einfach, da die Untermenüs praktischerweise nach oben hin aufklappen und keinerlei Bildschirmwechsel vonnöten machen.Die Bild- und Tonqualität dieser norwegischen Produktion sind ausgezeichnet und beweisen einmal mehr, dass man auch in Europa sehr gute Blockbuster zu produzieren versteht, die Hollywood in nichts nachstehen.Einige wenige Extras runden das Gesamterscheinungsbild ab, wenngleich ich mir hier ruhig ein paar nähere Informationen über den wahren Jan Baalsrud gewünscht hätte.●●●●●●●●●● MEIN FAZIT ●●●●●●●●●●Ein ergreifendes Kriegsdrama mit wahrem Hintergrund in der eisigen Hölle Norwegens mit guter Blu-ray Qualität.
