Q: What is the top piece made out of?

The top part is made out of plastic. I purchased this for my wife, she really enjoyed it. Ours didn't last very long as the bottom and top stopped staying attached to each other and all the tea would fall out in the mug while it was steeping.

Q: What material is the top part made out of?

The top, I believe, is molded hollow plastic, so that it will float, and the bottom is a thin metal. By the way, it is adorable and works well.

The plastic part doesn't touch the water, the buoyancy prevents it from touching.

Q: Can it be used for coffee?

Yeah coffee should work to just fine
