Expert Sudoku Review: Best Sudoku book in four years of solving these puzzles! - Definitely challenging and thoroughly enjoyable. Some puzzles took 20 minutes, others several hours. My only disappointment was reaching the end and realizing that I have to buy another book to work on now. Will look for another book from this same publisher. Review: Love this book - This is a great book. Small enough to take with and the puzzles are difficult! The book opens wide enough to work on both sides of page, altho it does not lie flat. My 2nd time using it!

Book Cover States "Expert", Inside They're Called Them "Difficult"
The Pros: The book is fairly small and easy to take with me when I know I'll have time to kill. There's just one puzzle per page, so there's enough room to pencil in up to four numbers per box. There's 319 puzzles in total, and solutions for all 319 in the back of the book. The Cons: I don't know that there's a uniform standard in the Sudoku world for what constitutes an expert puzzle vs. a difficult one. However, this book uses both terms to describe all of the puzzles ("expert" on the cover and "difficult" above each puzzle). To me, that's conflicting. What I do know is that I completed puzzles 1-12 first, then I skipped to the last four puzzles. The last four puzzles were a bit more difficult than the first twelve. Fourteen of the sixteen puzzles I've completed did not require any advanced strategy. Only two required the X-Wing strategy, which is not super advanced. So, I'll continuing my way through the book, but will now go backwards from last puzzle to first, for as long as I can stay engaged. I'll probably end up trying to find a TRUE expert book (if there is one) or at least something more advanced. The problem is, the marketers use terms like Extreme, Black Belt, World's Hardest, Nasty, and Genius Level to entice puzzlers to buy their books. Again, there's apparently no standard for difficulty in the Sudoku world, so you don't really know what you're getting until you buy it. Come to think of it, I believe that's the winning strategy! (for the sellers).

It really is better
The book makes the claim that Nikoli's hand-crafted sudoku puzzles are more enjoyable than computer-generated ones. I was skeptical at first, but I found it to be true. I have told others, none of whom seem to believe me at first, but when they try these puzzles, they see the beauty and fun of them. They really are better. I recommend these the highest possible amount. This collection is not too hard. The moderate difficulty is maintained throughout, which gives a sense of progress without the bottle necking. I enjoy the X-Treme Sudoku the most, but my father likes this one, and my great-nephew the Original Sudoku .

This is the smooth jazz equivalent of sudoku
I have done most of the super difficult sudoku books, and they were getting boring. Then I found this book (I was aware that Nikoli does human-made puzzles). I've solved over 100 of the puzzles, all without having to do a full mark-up, and I have loved every one of them. The puzzle-makers are correct that human-made puzzles lead you on an interesting path, while computer-made puzzles lead you to a single point of difficulty, followed by an uninteresting denouement. No, these puzzles are definitely not easy. But they allow you to follow logical steps to a conclusion. Try them. You might be excited about them!

Really GOOD puzzles AND it has an excellent binding .
The puzzles are what you expect in a "difficult " catagory and the pages do not fall out after extended use as some I have had did. Altogether even though some of the puzzles seem more than difficult to me I rate it 5 stars because it delivers a varatity of challenges. Harold

My husband aims to do one a day. He says they are challenging enough to make him think, and sometimes take him more than one day. But they are no so impossible that he gets frustrated and gives up.
