If I just use the outer container to put soup in, will it stay hot? Is the outer lid insulated and leak-proof?

I haven't tried that. I have put burritos in. Yes the lid is insulated. It really keeps things hot. I warm the container up with hot water before using it.

I do not know exactly, but it is quite wide. It should be over 4 inches in diameter.

The large one holds about 1cup the smaller 2 hold about a half cup
