Can you use the lamp and laser individually or do you have to turn both on at the same time?

Yes, you can use them separately. I love this headlamp. I take it camping and love the red laser.

How small does the strap go? Would it fit a child?

It’s adjustable. It will fit a child’s head.

is the light from the laser visible in broad daylight ? I want to practice my golf swing pointing at the ball.

The effect will be much worse in the daytime, and it will almost be invisible in the sunny day.
