Simple, fun, and perfect for little ones
My 4-year-old grandson just started getting into games, so we were looking for something age-appropriate—and this was a hit! He loves playing with it, and it’s definitely suitable for younger kids. No assembly required out of the box, which is a win. You just separate the swords from the plastic and you’re good to go. This is actually a rerelease of a game I played when I was a kid, and honestly, not much has changed—which is kind of the charm. Same basic setup, same suspenseful pop. It’s nice to see a classic still holding its own with a new generation. Now, I’ll admit: I had a moment trying to figure out how to get the pirate into the barrel. There are no real instructions aside from a note on the box that says “twist the pirate in place.” Turns out, there’s a notch inside the barrel you need to line up with the base of the pirate—then twist to lock him in. Once I figured that out, smooth sailing. When the pirate pops out, it’s not exactly dramatic—don’t expect him to launch across the room. But for a 4-year-old, it’s just the right amount of surprise, and my grandson laughs every time. No batteries required, which is great. One small downside: there’s no built-in storage for the swords, so you’ll either toss them back in the box, find a little container to keep them together or keep them stuck in the barrel but if you go that route the barrel will not fit back in the box. One note for parents—if you're hesitant about the whole “sticking swords in a barrel to stab a pirate” concept, there are other themed versions out there like Bluey or Super Mario that might feel a bit more playful and less pirate-pokey. Same game, just a different vibe. Overall, it’s a simple, engaging toy that’s perfect for young kids. Great value for the fun it brings!

Easy to play for my toddler son. No assembly required just popping out the swords from the plastic. Cute gift for younger aged children

Fun. Doesn’t work consistently
This game is so fun when it works properly. The pirate doesn’t always pop up.

Easy to play with looks of excitement
Bought for Grandboys at Christmas. They and Grandma (me] had so much fun playing. It was the thrill and excitement of seeing who was going to win that was so much fun. Our boys are 4,5(twins)

Fun but doesn't always work
This is a fun little toy, but the pop-up mechanism does not always work. There have been times when we have put swords in every single slot, and the pirate just remains in the barrel.

Fun
This is a great game, my daughter loves it, sometimes the pirate won't pop out with all the swords placed in the barrel, but my husband was able to fix it quite easily. Our 4 year old is able to play the game easily, it would be even better if the pirate said good ole pirate phrases like "shiver my timbers," "Arrgh" or other phrases when he is popped out of the barrel

Greta quality and size

Defective. It rarely works properly. You can insert all the knives and the pirate often doesn’t pop up at all. It works maybe once every five tries, which makes it pretty much useless.

Pop Up Pirate is one of those games that almost everyone remembers, and it’s great to see that it’s just as fun now as it ever was. We bought it for our five-year-old, who loves getting everynoe together for a quick game - it’s often one of the first things she reaches for when friends or family are around. The build quality feels reassuringly solid and sturdy, very much in keeping with the versions many of us grew up with. The barrel and pirate are robust enough to cope with repeated use, and the swords slot in smoothly. Each round only takes a couple of minutes, which makes it ideal for shorter attention spans and easy to fit in between other activities. Despite its simplicity, it has great replayability. The anticipation of not knowing which sword will make the pirate pop never seems to wear off, and it consistently gets laughs from both kids and adults. When you’re done, everything packs away neatly, making it easy to store without losing pieces. A simple, well-made game that’s stood the test of time and still works brilliantly as a fast, inclusive family favourite.
