The board folds on hinges. There is no crease in the board. It doesn’t cause any problems when ironing. You don’t even notice the the area where it folds, the two parts come together when unfolded and there is no gap.

how thick is the pad and can it be removed?

Hi Barbara. The cover can be removed for cleaning. I would recommend hand cleaning with soap and warm water. The cover has a nice pad beneath. Thick enough that the plastic iron board isn't affected.
