8 & 8.1 yes AND ALSO: all versions of xp and vista & versions of windows 7.., BUT if its a new printer then it usually has 2 cartridges thats supplied with it to begin with ( BUT i think those cartridges are like 1/2 to 3/4s full & they dont last to long - or the ones i got with mine didnt anyway ) BUT it works with the above OSs aswell as ubuntu linux & linux mint 17 .., NOTE ubuntu linux alredy has the printer drivers installed & u need only choose the port ur going to use.., u can find ink at www.private.abacus24-7.com, hp 61 & 61xl cartridges .., & LASTLY: dont worry abt. HPs gripe about using re-manufactured ink cuz the printers' warranty is like 30 or 90-days & after its run out hp wudnt repair or replace the printer anyway ! so what business is it of theirs whether u buy an ink refill kit here on amazon OR some-other place & refill ur own cartridges OR buy it from another place other than hp ??..

Do you have to install a CD in your laptop in order for it to work ??

You can download drivers on-line from the HP website or a 3rd party if you don't have a working CD drive. I hooked mine up to an older HP desktop and it worked, both with Windows, and with Linux operating systems. It's a pretty simple printer, so most systems should not have an issue - either a generic printer driver or the one from HP work.

will it work with imac desktop running 10.9 mavericks?

I don't run mavericks but I have a MacBook Pro 2008 with the updated OS X 10.8.5 and it works great!
