Can you use a different brand for a replacement pencil with the extender?

Yes you can. I think that the replacement pencils are great, but they're definitely overpriced. Regular high quality pencils will do the job. Just watch for the size factor.

What dictates this astronomical pricing? It's only a pencil with a cap and an sharpener... did I miss something? Is it made out of solid platinum?

Will regular faber pencils fit/work with this once includsed one is gone?

They do, I also use it with Mitsubishi hi-Uni as well as uni pencils, and black wing 602s. Most all pencils fit in, some differently than others.
