how long before this dries out and is useless if put in the wrong places?

If possible, cut a piece of paper plate which will have a slight waxy type coating and place the bait on there. This should slow the absorption of the moisture in the gel so it will not dry out quite as fast. I've not tried it with this specific bait, but I've done this with other baits with IGR and ant bait gels and it worked well, plus made clean up easier.
