It is battery operated, they are supplied with the alarm. The unit has a recommended lifespan of 10 years

Optical = means it could only operate when it sees smoke ?? or will operate when sensing smoke

Optical means the alarm contains a pulsed infrared LED which pulses a beam of light into the sensor chamber every 10 seconds to check for smoke particles.

Can this be installed using adhesive magnetic mounts?

Yes, as long as you align the magnets correctly, the alarm is not very heavy, and the alarm replacement would be easy to replace.

Is this compatible with the kiddie model 0910 smoke alarm please?

The mounting plate would need to be changed which is provided in the box with the 29HDRB
