Makita BO5030K 5" Random Orbit Sander, with Tool Case

Light weight and works great

Makita tools have been my preferred tools for ove 40 years. My old sander wore out and died a horrible death after only 35 years (!!!) and I had to have a replacement. This is pretty much the same sander - random orbit orbital sander - so it was an easy choice. It performs as well as the sander it replaces, and is a design I've used for decades. I love the quality and design of Makita Tools!

I'm very happy with this purchase. I had a "mouse" style electric sander and needed this one for other types of jobs. I'm using it for finishing electric guitar bodies. I chose the Makita BO5030K 5" Random Orbit Sander because of it's simplicity, price, and the reputation of the brand. It didn't disappoint. I'm also a hobbyist, so I didn't want to spend more than $80 if possible. I started using it out of the box (ordered the discs separately) with great results so far. Not sure how to rate it in terms of loudness, as I would have to compare with other similar items and this is the first and only random orbit sander I've used. I can say I find it ergonomic although when using it continuously for more than 5 minutes in certain angles, the arm may get tired and it doesn't seem designed to switching hands without turning it off first. If it had a second handle or way to grab it, then it would be possible.

This is a great little sander. I use for finish sanding for hobby woodworking projects. It is relatively lightweight and produces very little vibration, so you can sand without fatigue. It has a lot of power - I've used it on cherry, hard maple, and walnut so far. The dust collection works well provided you line up the holes in the sanding disk with the pad. It is not abnormally noisy, but you should wear ear protection. I recommend it!

Minimal packaging makes this easy to open, there is only a cardboard wraparound on the plastic case, just rip it off, push the two case buttons to the side, and the case is open. There is an instruction manual, but this is an on/off machine, so not much to learn there. They do talk about taking the adhesive backing off the disc, but most discs do NOT have any backing to remove, you simply apply them to the sander and make sure they are firmly attached. The dust bag actually works, I sanded on a flat piece cross section of walnut wood, and was pleasantly surprised to find most of the dust in the bag. One let down, there was no sanding disc in my box. Now, how cheap can you get. Good tool, makes great addition to your power tool collection.

This corded Makita Random Orbital sander did a great job removing old paint from our metal bulkhead. The battery operated sander I borrowed from a friend ran out of power after 10-15 minutes.

I wore my last one out after nearly two years if continuous usage. I replaced it with another one. Buy a couple of replacement discs too. They will come in handy. This has all the power you need and can handle 40 grit and higher easily and smoothly.
