Tamiya 70168 Double Gearbox

As with others, I bought this with the Tamiya tank track vehicle platform kit. The gearbox is cool. It has the availability of 4 gear ratios and is powered by small hobby motors and plastic gears with metal drive shafts. All of the gears also ride on metal shafts and have brass looking bushings at the mounting point to the gearbox body. You literally assemble everything but the motors themselves and you do have to press the gear on the motor shaft (by hand). It takes a little while to put it together, but it is not too hard. They do provide the tiny Allen wrench needed and the only other tools you will need are something to snip the gears out of the plastic form and a Phillips screwdriver. It is nice and it works fine understand this is for a lightweight platform. Motors are audibly pretty quiet as are the gears. I'm running at 3.5v but have tested with a fresh 4.8v pack, both seem fine. If interfacing with electronics, you will need a motor controller or H bridge to handle the current - you can not hook this directly to your microcontoller or RC receiver if there is not a motor control built in.

I am building a robot, some people might not say fast enough. actually more than anything it is likely to be an animatronic over a legitimate robot. Tamiya makes sound products, I know this as I used to build R/C off road vehicles, I had vested interest in another company, though I have used Tamiya products and built models amongst other. At this time I have only built the gear boxes and broke them down to change the ratio out, these boxes have independent motors and gearboxes single ratio at a time and not all that complicated to change the ratio in about 5-10 minutes. they are limited to 3 volts so i will likely have to add on a resistor as i plan on using two of these boxes at the same time and running separate batteries does not make sense. One of the kits did not include an allen wrench, though the other did and I have plenty of bent hex keys. If I recall at the time of my finished project, years down the road I will share what i used these motors for until then I hope this review is helpful. I cannot adequately evaluate the amount of fun these are, i certainly could say I received enjoyment from assembling them, greater than a 3 implies. Once I use them I am sure the fun will soar.

Not to difficult to assemble, but be aware that it does require assembly and the pieces are small and it takes a certain amount of balancing and coordination to put this together. Be careful about which Tamiya mounting plate you use as this motor is too wide for the 70157 Universal Plate and you will have to modify the plate in order to mount the motor. Modification involves cutting circular slots in the side of the plate and enlarging two of the holes so it will mount easily. Otherwise it will still fit perfectly in the 70157 plate set and in the 70108 tracked vehicle chassis kit, although I found the wooden plate included in the 70108 kit to be a little more difficult to modify. I would honestly recommend getting the wider plate kit and getting the longer axles to make the 70108 chassis fit correctly.

I purchased this gear box when I was building a six legged walking machine and needed a gear box to fit between my brushless motors and the drivetrain. The supplied motors were too weak and I tried to modify the box to allow me to mount some hobbyking brushless motors. I couldn't ever get the gears to stay meshed from the with the high torque that the motors put out. The gears never stripped which is impressive but they would skip. Tough gears. As a hobby gear box this package is great! Good instructions on how to set up gear ratios and when assembled with intended motors works perfect! Great way to learn about how gear ratios work. Only problem I had was my own fault trying to use brushless motors, other than that this is a great product!

This is a dual drive gear box and it's perfect for your tank or tractor project. Quality is great and construction is easy. There are 4 possible gear ratio combinations. That is my main gripe with this kit. There is a severe jump between the low gears and the high gears. This kit could be very much improved with an intermediate gear ratio between 38:1 and 114:1. Other than that it needs a more robust mounting lug. Mine broke off after some light use. And the gearbox is exposed so if you are using this in a dusty or linty environment (like any kids room ever) it will get gummed up.

My big problem is that I bought the 70157 Universal Plate set because it said "universal." Wrong! You need the 70098 Universal Plate set for this gearbox and motor. They could have been more clear that there are two incompatible "universal" plate sets. Anyway, I made it fit. The gearbox seems interesting and it was easy to assemble. I look forward to putting it to work someday. The electrical contact tabs for the motor are exposed, extremely light and very fragile. I worry about them.

This double gearbox kit was fairly easy to assemble. The instructions are in English and Japanese, and went together easily. I think the name "4-speed" is a little misleading. There are 4 choices of gear ratio that can be used, but you need to completely disassemble and reassemble the gearbox to change gears. I bought this to use with the Tamiya Tracked Vehicle Chassis kit, also available on Amazon and probably listed above under the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" category. It is slightly wider than the platform provided in the chassis kit, but you can use the included bracket to attach it with a little cutting of the platform. Once the wheels and tracks are on it looks good and you can't really see the modifications.

Not things like this could probably be ok to use in free wheel only if you only like to se a car moving back and forth then then you can try this but if need to push just don’t waste your money

Easy to assemble best quality

It looks amazing, instructions inside and into the box I decided to assembly with biggest torque around 300:1 Its a little difficult until figuring out how to assemble the shafts, you need to put the plastic yellow stoppers so the small shafts doesn't get out. The rest of the assembly is very easy ans straighforward. It works perfectly with the track set, I could make a small tank and move it around!
