Q: How do these stay in place? It says there is a spring, but the metal plate on the back looks like it solid immovable metal. How does it come back off?

The metal part is a spring attached at the center of the cover in the back. You can bend the two ends to insert it into the hole and then it holds in place by friction.

Q: Once in place, can the cover be easily removed to allow access in the future?

Yes, It is very easily removed.

Q: Is this my best option for covering a hole from a smoke detector?

This could be an option for you. We used it to cover a larger hole in our ceiling in the finished part of our basement. There are different sizes; check to see what see you would actually need.

Q: I need one to cover a 5" ceiling hole, is there a size that is made for this or will I have to cut the hold larger?

There is no size that is made for this. You'll need to enlarge your opening to 6" in diameter and use APR-0701 panel
