The Essential Collection[2 CD]

"Essential" is a word that is so overused by record companies when marketing greatest hits albums, that it is hard to know if the set will truly be an essential purchase, but in ABBA's case, The Essential Collection lives up to its name. Of all the ABBA compilations on the market, this is the most thorough. While the very popular Gold album only focuses on the big hits, this one is for those looking for a bit more. Essential contains all of their official singles, in chronological order, plus a few choice cuts (Bang-A-Boomerang, That's Me, Happy New Year, and One Man, One Woman were not technically singles, but did have music videos, so their inclusion is not random, and the quality of these tracks are equal to those that were hits). The only downside of the album being in chronological order is that the singles from Ring Ring are first, and aside from the title track, they are the weakest of the bunch, but once you get past those, all of the songs are fantastic. I recommend this album to those who want the full ABBA experience. If you are brand new to ABBA, you might want save a few bucks and go for Gold, as the amount of tracks here might seem overwhelming at first, but if you already know the big hits, and are thirsty for a bit more, this is a great 2 CD set to have. NOTE: There is also a very similar album that was released earlier called The Definitive Collection. The difference is it does not have the four non-singles I listed. In their place are two remixes, so unless you're dying to have a slowed down version of Ring Ring and an extended dance mix of Voulez-Vous, Essential is the better buy.

A wonderful 2 CD set of they're greatest hits. I bought it simply because there were a few songs on it that aren't on Abba Gold which I also have. If you are an Abba fan and thinking about buying one of their CD's this is a great one to have.

The best ABBA compilation ever made. I had The Definitive Collection as a child and after I learned The Essential Collection is just an improved version of that collection, I had to buy it, I love that they included Happy New Year. I don't understand the reviews about poor sound quality, I have a fairly decent setup and the quality sounds nothing short of amazing, I've never actually heard any ABBA releases with poor sound quality. The quality, the packaging, the whole look and feel of this set is awesome, I love it.

This seems to be a package for serious fans who were yet unborn when the group broke up. More flash than substance, but it's all about the music after all.

Abba was really popular when I was a kid back in the 1970's. My mom had several of their records that were on the turntable all the time. My 7 year old son heard one of their many chart topping hits on our local oldies radio station a few weeks back and absolutely loved it. He kept asking me when they were going to play it again. I knew it might be a while before it came back around for airplay so I purchased this excellent compilation. All of Abba's big hits are here along with quite a few lesser known but very enjoyable numbers. We listened to the full 30 songs on a lengthy car ride the other day and enjoyed nearly every tune. My kid is singing some of the songs three days later. This is a great collection and it is a must have for the '70's music enthusiast. Take it from me - if you have young children they will almost certainly love it too!

ABBA's "The Essential Collection" includes all of their biggest hits and other delightful songs that have the unique ABBA sound. There is not a song on the album that you will not like. This collection of music is ABBA at its best. ABBA can confidently claim to be one of the most successful pop groups ever to have hit the music scene. Between 1974 and 1981 they had nineteen Top Ten hits...most which made it to the top of the charts in several countries. ABBA's sound was unique and their collective talent immense. Their rich sound is captured in "The Essential Collection." I recommend that you buy or download this wonderful collection of ABBA songs and take a journey back the years that featured their Golden Sound.

Every ABBA fan should get this cd. It has all their greatest hits. The songs a re fun to listen to.
