No. These are not water resistant. They are a battery powered device that will not work and could potentially be permanently damaged if used near or in water.

This device works using 3 AA batteries.

Can this be updated to the new guidlines?

Unfortunately, this unit can not be upgraded. However, it is inexpensive enough to be purchased twice and still cost less than most upgradable trainers.
