How do you charge this and how do you know if the battery is charging bc I plugged the wire in and connected to the battery not sure if charging

You put charger on the hand set, plug it in and switch it on. by the handle there is a dial that has carpet and turbon on it. When it is charging this area lights up blue.

Can they b left on chsrge

I leave mine on charge and have not had a problem. If they are not left on charge, you would then have to wait until it charges up again. How long that will take, I do not know. I have to say I have managed to mislay my instructions leaflet. Maybe there is something written in that.

Is this freestanding or needs to rest against something?

It needs to rest against something. It does come with a plastic bit that you can attach to the wall but I personally don’t find it very secure.

My brush will not work no suction at all ,charged for 5 hours still no suctin brush has never worked,it's stood in the cupboard for just over 12 mont
