How hard is this to clean up, and will residue have any effect no gauges, refrigerant etc?

This is only for spraying the outside of HVAC equipment. Should have no contact with refrigerant or gauges. I normally follow up with a similar spray bottle filled only with water. A few spritzes and the residue is gone. Schrader valves need to be dried after water.

Why does description say battery powered?

I wouldn't know it's a spray bottle no battery
