Well made and functional
Pricey but it works. Ordered from Amazon warehouse. I used this to attach my Macbook Pro (older version) with the first generation thunderbolt plug to my old Canon Elura camcorder via a firewire cable. I also needed a firewire 400-800 adapter for the cable. After daisy chaining this to my laptop, iMovie was able to import my home movies archived on Mini DV tape. I also tried to order a thunderbolt-3 (USB-C) to thunderbolt-1 adapter from Amazon warehouse but received the wrong item. Will try to buy a new adapter at Amazon or at the Apple store. I can then daisy chain all the cables and adapters to my new Macbook Air (M2) via USB-C and try iMovie again.

Finally connected my Motif xs8 to newer computer!
Works well combined with other adapters to connect 2017 iMac i7 to my Yamaha Motif xs8 synthesizer running cubase 13 pro. This was quite a relief to me. I'm happy!

It works for FireWire external drives
I could not find a third party Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter - yeah apple works and apple is expensive . There are 3 types of Thunderbolt ports . #1 is for video only for external monitor . #2 ( this model) is for external monitor AND things like external drives like firewire ( in my case ) firewire is old tech but it works and there must still be enough out there for them to make the adapter . #3 Thunderbolt I think does it all . NOTE I saw a guy on youtube that needed to get data onto or off of a newer MacBook Pro and the only way he could do it was use a #3 into the laptop .. THEN a #2 into the #3 and then out to fire wire . Any way hope this may help people . The adapter works . THanks

Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt 2 WORKS
Official Apple products carry a price tag higher than you would think they should for adapters, cables, and peripherals. Certain peripherals and adapters are proprietary, and if you need it you have little other option. That said, the Apple Firewire 800 -> Thunderbolt 2 adapter worked flawlessly. I have an older iMac, so do NOT try using this on the newer post 2018 iMacs that take a Thunderbolt 3 connector. I needed to convert old DV Tape from a JVC video camera to my iMacs (yes, I already had a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter). Using the camera-supplied DV cord to Firewire 400, A Firewire 400->800 adapter, and the Firewire 800->Thunderbolt 2 adapter I was all set up in about 10 minutes and started on the first video. If you have older Firewire transfer devices you would like to use on an iMac or MacBook with Thunderbolt 2, this is the only choice. Thankfully, it is a GOOD choice. I highly recommend.

For 2018 and newer iMacs, ADDITIONAL ADAPTER REQUIRED to connect to FireWire devices
I just bought a new 2019 iMac. I want to transfer all my data off an old Mac Mini and an old Mac Pro that both use firewire. so, I came to amazon and searched for "thunderbolt to firewire adaptor" and the item on this page is what came up. So I bought it, got it, and realized it didn't fit on my new 2019 iMac! So, I did a little more poking around and learned that the item on this page is a Thunderbolt 2 adapter and it doesn't fit on the new iMac (nevermind it has the same little graphic symbol on the adapter that matches the symbol next to the port on my new iMac)! It turns out that the new Macs use Thunderbolt 3. It's so confusing. Lightning, Thunderbolt, USB-C etc etc. Who can keep all this straight. Anyway, Since the item on this page is a Thunderbolt 2 cable, I was wondering if there's a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. And it turns out there is. Right here. For $49 painful dollars more... (Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQ26QIY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 So here is the ordering of components and cables that I am now using to connect a Firewire Mac in "target disk" mode to my new imac. 2019 iMac with "Thunderbolt 3" port | Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter | Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter | Firewire 800 cable | 2008 Mac Pro (with firewire 800 port) And as I speak, the files are being transferred through this frankenstein monster of adapters and cables. I will use a file diffing tool to make sure everything copied successfully once the transfer is completed, but I see no reason why this shouldn't work. But damn. $80 for adapters and cables. But what can you do. Just... ouch. Anyway this scheme does work, albeit at a cost.

I wasn't really expecting this to work
I bought this because I have some excellent vintage recording equipment that is firewire based and none of the newer MAC computers have or support firewire anymore. I've been having to use Snow Leopard and an old MAC Pro in order to use this equipment. This adapter is a bit overpriced, just like everything that Apple offers, but it's working great and I'm now able to run Sierra on these machines. Snow Leopard doesn't even allow you to use the internet anymore. This has allowed me to use some vintage equipment that I haven't been able to use in a couple of years so it was well worth the price.

It works with Thunderbolt 2, but...
It works for me, with a Thunderbolt 2 port. As others have pointed out, that's important. If you have Thunderbolt 3 ports, the workaround is to use this AND a TB2 to TB3 adaptor. My 2015 iMac recognized this adapter as a Firewire 800 bus. I then connected it to several Firewire 400 devices, like external hard drives, and CD/DVD-RW drives, and they all work, HOWEVER, if I messed around with them, turning them off and on and disconnecting them and reconnecting them on the fly, Big Sur MacOS could not keep up, and I'd have to reboot. But, if I tested them the way I'd use them normally, they all work. I didn't absolutely need this dongle, but I was curious and wanted to test it out. The main thing I'll use it for is the optical drive, because this model of iMac doesn't have an internal SuperDrive like the older ones. Get one from Amazon Warehouse if you want to save some money. I bought one in "Acceptable" condition and they sent me one that's Like New in an original box.

Exactly what I needed for transfering old tapes into digital. Baffling that Apple stopped producing these. These are so useful even in 2025.

J'ai un nouveau iMac sans port firewire et cette adapteur m'a permis d'avoir accès mes disques firewire sans problème. Excellent produit même si je trouve que c'est vendu un peu trop cher.
