This is not the same as you were given in England, but taste the same. The one from England is Potters Herbals Malt Extract with cod liver oil

when I purchased it there was no flavour, it tasted exactly like it did in England, for me there certainly was no butterscotch flavor.

I think my Dad gave this to us as kids 60 years ago; a thick dark paste. My recollection is that it was sweet and chocolaty in color? is this it?

It is made from malt (extracted from Barley) and cod liver oil from fish. There is no lactose in it.
