The Crooked Branch: A Novel

My favorite book by the author. Excellent character development and use of flashback. A great read!

I was looking for a quick read after several very heavy books. This novel surely provided that with engaging characters, the familiar panic of new motherhood, and some good plot twists. Though I predicted them almost all, the story line kept me interested. The ending, however, was a bit abrupt, add though the author got to page -- and thought, "Oh, I have to end it here." In any case, this book lasted for much of another insomniac night...

I found this story to be informative, thoughtful, humorous and true to life in many ways. It helps to create a sense of gratitude for what others have endured and sympathy for others that may be struggling.

This was a quick read for me, and I enjoyed the story--especially the chapters set in Ireland. It was a good read, but not the great read I was anticipating; I can't put my finger on it, but something was missing. All the loose ends were wrapped up, but it felt anti-climactic to me.

A compelling story of lineage and postpartum blues. This story is told through the voice of a new mother , Majella who is doubting herself and her ability to parent. She feels crazy and even acts crazy at times. She finds an old diary of her great great grandmother and the rollercoaster gets to new heights. The best part is how this young woman discovers her own strength and how she comes from a long line of incredibly strong women. Takes every mother back to the birth of their own children and the miracle of family.

Man, it is heavy and not an easy read. So much tragedy, but so much raw truth that we need to hear! I really loved the two storylines and how we learn how they’re related. Amazing, relatable characters and storylines. Really enjoyed it.

This book makes every character palpable, you feel their emotions, their internal turmoil, wonderfully written. I loved the historical part about Ireland during the famine and typhoid.

Story was great. Writing very good

I downloaded this after reading the brilliant American Dirt. This is similarly compelling in its exploration of familial bonds and the strains upon mothers across two very different timelines. Having struggled with postnatal depression myself, this was a very believable exploration of the emotional turmoil of a new mother.

Just loved this book, wish it was the start of a series, brilliant writer!!
