The book advocates for the preservation of ethnic recipes and the joy of actually preparing them.
"A Lithuanian Cookbook for my Irish Wife" is a book far more interesting than you might think. Although the recipes in the book are in fact Lithuanian, the point of the book is to encourage the reader to seek out and preserve "ethnic" recipes. The book postulates that we will get satisfaction from preparing meals based on the old recipes while at the same time helping to preserve our culinary history. As a side bonus, the author includes stories and photos from his childhood growing up in a Lithuanian family in central Connecticut. The book may not be for everyone, but if you have an interest in wanting to preserve the secrets of old ethnic recipes, this is the book for you.

Not what I thought...
I wanted a Lithuanian cookbook, not the story of someone’s life. There are not enough recipes to even call it a cookbook. If you want to read a biography then you will like this book.

... definitely buy this book for the delicious recipes (my favorite so far is the potato pancake)
You should definitely buy this book for the delicious recipes (my favorite so far is the potato pancake), but what I enjoyed most was reading about Sills’ family history and Lithuanian culture in America. I found the book to be very readable and entertaining, especially for a cook book. It helps that his cooking instructions are detailed, and the book includes photos of the dishes. Sills makes a good case for the importance of preserving heritage recipes and taking the time to cook the same foods that previous generations did. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to try their hand at cooking Lithuanian dishes, and also to anyone who wants to be reminded of why food and old family recipes are the heart of so many family gatherings.
