Prevent Mold in Cyanotype Solution A
I ordered this Sodium Benzoate 99% USP/FCC Grade 8 oz to prevent mold from growing in my ferric ammonium citrate solution. I make a lot of cyanotypes. Cyanotype is a very old photographic process that results in prints that are blue and white. You create a cyanotype by coating paper with a mixture of two solutions -- ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. You keep these two solutions separated from one another until you are ready to coat some paper. The problem with ferric ammonium citrate, however, is that it tends to grow mold. If this happens, you don't need to throw your solution away, but you do need to filter it to get rid of the mold. Not only does this add time to the process of coating, it is gross. I did some investigation on methods to prevent mold growth. Some folks use a few crystals of thymol. Others use formalin. Neither of these are easy to find. Then, another cyanotype artist suggested sodium benzoate. He specified 99.9% pure, but the jump from 99% to 99.9% results in a huge cost difference. Based on what I've read about sodium benzoate, it should work just fine at preventing mold. I added a gram while mixing up 100ml of ferric ammonium citrate. It dissolved easily. I let it sit for a day, then used it to coat some paper. I see absolutely no difference in the color, contrast, or quality of the prints I get as compared to prints from emulsion with no sodium benzoate. If you enjoy making cyanotypes but hate straining mold, give sodium benzoate a try. This 8 ounce package contains enough sodium benzoate to last for 22 liters of ferric ammonium citrate solution assuming that you use the recommended 1% solution. In other words, a lifetime supply.

As advertised
Product is as advertised. If you're making small batches of product with the stuff be sure to use an accurate scale since being off by even 0.001 g can make a difference.

Effective preservative for Orange Juice.
A quarter teaspoon dissolved in hot water and used when mixing up a half gallon of Orange Juice concentrate has stopped it from spoiling within the week. That's what I got this for, and it works perfectly, and it doesn't affect the taste of the juice.
