Pillar Apple, Malus tschonoskii, Small to Medium Sized Tree, Rarely Offered, Great for UK Climate, 20-30cm Plant in an 8cm Pot

Description

The Malus is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree that is known for its showy flowers during the spring and its edible fruits or ornamental display in the autumn. It has a distinctive columnar habit with fairly large, ovate leaves, which unlike most crabapples turn a vibrant fiery red and orange from mid-October. From April-May, displays of beautiful, white flowers are in bloom that are preceded by attractive pink flower buds. 2-3cm slightly flattened but wide dotted fruits are produced. The pale red and yellow fruits are edible raw or cooked and attract lots of wildlife. For optimum growth, the plant prefers a fully sunny position and moist soil, but really it will grow well in any normal garden position. It can withstand temperatures as low as -20c.
