does anyone know what oil was used by Norpro originally to season the cast iron ?

Typically cast irons are not factory seasoned. However several reviewers have commented that there was an oil that imparted a less than desire able taste, and a noticeable aroma when heating. I can confirm this, and to remedy it... I threw mine in a bonfire and let it rest in until the following day. After seasoning the pan with butter, the previously noticeable tastes/smells were gone. That being said. The "half rounds" in the pan are less so spherical, and more so like a straight walled but slightly rounded out muffin tin. This makes flipping them more difficult, and very likely to tear. They are also very small which makes filling more difficult than other designs I have used. Hope this helps.

No coating.....Sesoned cast iron is always best and works better than thin, coated metal. I'm still using a cast iron corn muffin pan that my grandmother bought in 1927... try that with a non-stick pan.
