Are these genuine lEGO?

Yes. These are genuine Legos and will integrate with any you already own

can the wheels and gears be used with regular Legos to build cars, etc or are they only useful if you follow the directions in the booklet?

You can use these Legos along with your other Legos. I tried very hard to keep these separated from the others so my son could easily build the gearbots without having to search for pieces but that didn’t happen! He likes to build things the way he deems fit anyway!
