How to apply mindfulness to our daily communication
This is a very succinct book on communicating. It digs through the roots of all communication issues and misunderstandings between people- beginning with self-communication to communication within a community. Given that this is a book by a Zen master, mindfulness is the core concept of this book. It guides on how to remain mindful in all our communication from self to work to relationships to politics; and how to imbibe the skills of DEEP LISTENING and LOVING SPEECH. There is a full chapter on how to use mindful language and examples of mantras (sentences we can use) to improve our communication - For example - 'I am here for you' and 'I know you are there and it makes me very happy.' These are simple sentences which we rarely use in daily lives because maybe we are never taught to say it or find it weird. The book offers many such sentences to use in different emotional scenarios of our relationships with people we interact with. One of the rare insights I found in the book, is worth mentioning: WE ARE ALWAYS COMMUNICATING- in thoughts, speech and actions. And our communication is our continuation after we are dead and gone. This last chapter alone makes the book worth reading. The book is slightly on the meditative and spiritual side of things. It offers a one-size-fits-all guide to all communication issues for all relationships. So sometimes it feels that the author is generalising. If you are looking for a more practical book with specific life scenarios, then check out 'Difficult Conversations' by Sheila Heen & Douglas Stone which deals with the psychological and social side of conversations. [ I bought a paperback edition of this book and the fonts, layout, paper and binding quality all are very good.]

Strong and compelling insights on the importance of healthy communication
The teachings are highly relevant and powerful. I am intrigued to find that the Buddhist teachings from so long ago are on the same page with the latest psychological research on multiple points. For instance, the suffering of our ancestors that is passed down to us that Thich Nhat Hanh mentions in part maps to the traumatic experiences encoded by the epi-genome onto the DNA, which is one way generational trauma is passed down in families. Fascinating to learn about and grateful for our ancestors for sharing such insights with us.

Thay... is a gift to mankind
Thay’s books come from his direct experience. His sacrifice and selfless service to mankind is pure divinity. And his writings reflect that.

Well worth a read
If I had an option I would have given 4.5 stars rather than 5 and only because the beginning is a bit rambly and repetitive but wade through that and there is gold. Most of the book has some great advice and strategies around communication in an easy-to-read and digestible format. It mentions once in a sentence about abusive relationships not being appropriate and people not having to endure it. I wish it said a bit more to drive home that if a person is in an abusive relationship is not acceptable and there is a time when action to end the relationship is an appropriate option and what communication in an abusive relationship may look like.

Utile

Wow
It is obvious that the writer lives and breathes his subject. I sometimes prefer to read the westernised versions of mindfulness based books because they are more contextual. However, this book is very accessible and oozes wisdom and simple steps to take along the way. An an read read from a true Master!
