Do I need 16gb of ram for sims and photo editing or will 8gb do?

I use Affinity Photo and that app uses 10gb of memory over my 16gb MacBook M1 Pro. My MacBook didn’t even sweat when that amount of memory usage was overflowing. With assumptions what you do with Adobe Lightroom I think 8gb sufficient for at least 4 years

My rule of thumb when deciding permanent computer configuration is “if your unsure you need that amount you most likely don’t” but I understand the new M1 has a new memory architecture that is confusing to ppl configuring there

Is this good for uni life or should i go for a surface laptop?

I can find no fault with the MacBook air M1. It's very light, lovely screen and incredibly fast. You will need a USB c hub to create more usb/HDMI ports but otherwise it's a fine laptop. Incidentally, I came to this laptop from a Windows device which simply stopped working after a Windows update. I have since read that this has been a common problem. No such problems with the MacBook. I also have an iMac which is 6 years old and has been totally reliable. No hesitation in recommending.
