Do you need to purchase the pen holder to use these?

No, these pens are designed to fit. The pen holder (which I also purchased) is designed to hold any pen or pencil you want to use in the cameo (some people don't like the ones that are designed to fit and prefer to purchase their own! My wife uses a combination of both)
