Are the 18 volt lithium ion batteries usable on the 20 volt systems and vice versa?

Each tool and battery has a configuration to only allow the right battery to be inserted.18 and 20 are not interchangeable.

Stanley holds the patent on 18V and 20V LiON tool batteries. 18V lithiun really is the same as The 20V LiON--20V lithium tool batteries available for Porter-Cable, from Stanley and 3rd parties, is just pumped-up marketing for actual 18V. Porter-Cable was purchased by Stanley some years ago--the point is moot. Kobalt put out 24V lithium tools--simply to bypass Stanley's royalties and legal hassles for 18-20V lithium batteries.....
