Can you set these up using Smart Life?

yes you can but you still can only use it on certaain devices

Can I use this in a multi-bulb lamp holder connected to one on/off switch?

I am using it in thevsame setup you describe. I have the switch permanently on so that I can control it using the google assistant or app only.

Does the bulb need to be powered by the mains or could I have the lamp unplugged and it would turn on through the wifi? Thank you

It needs to be powered on via the mains. WiFi doesn't provide power. Works really well. I have it linked to my Alexa so, I can use voice command to tell Alexa to switch off and on light. Plus you can ask her switch the light to any colour by any %. So, I can ask Alexa to put the light on my 10 in baby blue. Works really well.
