Does this come with a cartridge for the music sheet? It's telling me to insert one but i don't have it.

It comes with 2 insert sheets one with numbers on one side and fruits and colors on the other side. 2nd sheet Human body and other side different types of music. There is a button on the desk you slide to activity mode for inserts and music mode and it plays children songs. I hope this helps.

Can a child place a piece of paper on the activity board and draw on it, or would that damage the surface?

It probably would damage it. You actually lift the activity board & there is a small desk underneath with a clip so you can use it as an easel.
