would these be an upgrade from the focusrite 2i2 in terms of sound quality? i use it mainly to power my headphones dt 770 pro 80 ohms and adam audio

My wife has the Focusrite, and I have the iD4- they are comparable until you have digital interference nearby. iD4 is much quieter.

which cables and how many do i need to connect studio monitors. this is for a gift and i have no idea what it needs to setup. thanks

The Audient iD4 has two outputs that require a TRS connector. You'll need to determine the connection required by the monitors to buy the proper cables to connect them to the Audient.

Can the id4 run on usb power from my macbook, or does it require it's own separate power source?

Yes. It runs off of USB power. It actually doesn't even have a power input on it.
