Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design is intended for students beginning the study of mechanical engineering design. Students will find that the text inherently directs them into familiarity with both the basics of design decisions and the standards of industrial components. It combines the straightforward focus on fundamentals that instructors have come to expect, with a modern emphasis on design and new applications. The tenth edition maintains the well-designed approach that has made this book the standard in machine design for nearly 50 years. Review: Mechanical engineering bible - The bible of mechanical engineering. This book covers a huge range of topics which will be useful to everyone from mechanical engineering students to engineering professionals. It doesn't have as many examples as some other engineering design books, but it makes up for this in its quality of content. A few of the mechanical engineers that I work with carry this book on their shelves to use as reference. Would recommend to anyone who wants a great reference. Review: It's worth having - I bought this for my Mechanical Engineering Design class in my junior year of undergrad. I have to say, out of all the textbooks that I have needed, I would say this one is actually worth buying. The book is well written and the examples are good. I was lucky enough to have a professor who is extremely knowledgeable on the material so that helped a lot as well. I bought it brand new, when the price was down to $115. Despite it being the middle of the semester when I bought it, I figured that this would be useful beyond the class. I have yet to determine that, so I may have to update this review in the future.

Machine Design
Shigley's mechanical engineering design books are starting to look better on the covers. It's great to have a reference book like this for machine design classes and mechanics of materials. Solutions to selected problems are in the back of the work to verify whether you're doing the problems correctly or not. Definitely a good book to read and gain a lot of knowledge from.

Decent Mech. Design Textbook.
This book isn’t terrible. It does a decent job explaining a fairly difficult subject, I just had a poor teacher who didn’t further help me understand the subject. The images are generally good and large enough to understand and there are quite a few example problems, but they all are very basic. The book itself is very large and heavy, so don’t expect to want to carry it around in a backpack all day, especially if you have other books/binders. It would be a great resource to keep around if you’re going into the mechanical field. Be sure to dedicate time to go through the book on your own.

Great professional resource, minor typo in 10 edition
Bought this a long time ago for a mechanical design engineering course and still use it as a reference for engineering work. I wanted to leave (and update) this review to list any typo that I've found in Shigleys Mechanical Engineering Design 10 edition. In example 7-1 on page 363, the solution mentions Table 6-6 to find the reliability endurance modifier; it is supposed to be Table 6-5.

Five Stars
This book is awesome and a great complement book to the mechanical engineering review manual (PE EXAM).

Supposedly a must have for the Mechanical Design Depth portion of the PE exam...
I bought this because it was a recommended supplement for the Mechanical Engineering PE exam, listed in both the MERM and in online blogs as a must have if you are taking the Mechanical Design Depth PM portion. If I could return it I would, unlike the MERM or even the Machine Design Handbook this book lays out examples in what I consider an often confusing way. I tried using it as a reference but I literally spent an hour trying to unravel an example in this book because so many vital steps were skipped. I'll lug this along with me but If I end up digging into this book then I know Im going to a 'hail mary.' I've referenced the Machine Design handbook a few times doing practice problems but mostly I've been just fine with the MERM. Honestly, unless you used this an undergrad and are familiar with it I would probably save the money and the weight in your bag. Great for theories and one question on the NEECs sample exam referenced this book but I doubt I'd be able to 1, Find what I need 2. Understand it 3. Apply it in less than 10 minutes or even an hour. For that reason I wouldnt buy it again for the PE exam. We'll see what i say after I take it....

The best made better still
There are many general Engineering Handbooks; Marks' is the best. This is slightly different. I've never found any other book that quite fills the niche Shigley did in the various editions of his work which led to this. it covers most of the technical material you need to actually do good mechanical engineering design. Gears, mechanism, strength of design, etc. There are better books on each individual subject, but no others I've seen that bring it all together into useful processes. This bulks out Shigley's earlier work with new and in some cases more detailed material. Worthy of a place on any Designer's desk.

Shigley's is a must have, even for the pencil pushers
If you have ever heard the words "mechanical engineering", you should probably buy this book. It will take you on a wil journey from understanding the basics of the design process, all the way to how to design rotating equipment. It covers pretty much everything mechanical design related, in a simple-to-understand way. If your professors are as lazy as mine, they'll take exams questions right from the in-text examples. Seriously. That has happened.
