Countless global brands , including Rolex, BMW, Louis Vuitton , and the New York Yankees , still use logos that were designed over 100 years ago . Yet there has never been a monograph devoted to the origins of logo design . In the second half of the 19th century, the trademark replaced traditional symbols such as the family coat of arms as a promotional and identifying symbol for companies. At first, the designs were often still figurative; only gradually did they develop into the abstract marks that have become fixtures in everyday life today. Author Jens Müller , described as the “logo detective” by Wired magazine, examined historical trademark registers, international corporate archives, and early design publications to unearth more than 6,000 logos from 1870 to 1940 . This unparalleled collection traces the development of modern trademarks and sheds light on forgotten designs and early versions of famous logos . The catalog is divided into four design categories: Pictorial, Form, Effect, and Typographic. Each chapter is then systematically subdivided according to basic elements of design such as circle, line, overlap, and outline, thus offering a new perspective on design principles that are still relevant today. Along with an extensive picture section, the book comprises an introduction by Jens Müller on the history of the trademark as well as a reproduction of the first comprehensive examination of modern corporate logos: the influential design pioneer F.H. Ehmcke’s (1878–1965) illustrated essay “Wahrzeichen—Warenzeichen” (Symbols—trademarks) from 1921. Also included are ten case studies of famous trademarks, including those of 3M, NBC, Shell, and Olivetti , and numerous rare images illustrating the—at times varied, at times consistent—developments in international logo design and the birth of the corporate identity . Logo Beginnings is not only a fundamental and inspiring graphic design manual but also an excellent read for anyone interested in social, cultural, and corporate history and the fascinating impact of trademarks. It is also the perfect complement to the TASCHEN classic Logo Modernism . Review: Great book, odd page layout - 1) Taschen books are generally Excellent 2) this book is a great resource on the history of logos that already exist, it's not to teach you how to design… With that said, I find the page layout odd! I’ve never seen a design book, about good design, that has the text start so close to the top of each page. It looks like a mistake. The bottom of the layout with page numbers also looks too high. It’s quite distracting. I’m an art director and designer of books and magazines myself and would not let this go to print. Either the print vendor shifted pages too high or the Art Director tried a style that is Not balanced. I can only think that maybe this was done so that the book can be printed smaller without resigning the page layout. Still distracting. Also, Taschen should stop printing their xxl books too small. The text becomes too small and difficult to read. It’s a cheaper price point and that’s good, but their designers should First start with a font size that is easier to read when printed smaller. Again, these books are great and designers should own a copy. Cheers Review: HOLY CRAP - Ever wonder if a book is worth $60? This one is. It's huge, quality paper, and filled with a century's worth of brilliant design. I was flabbergasted by the size and weight of the desertcart box.

This is a must have book
This book is incredible and a beautiful compliment to Logo Modernism. The price is a steal for the amount of content and overall quality. Definitely a must have book for any designer. Also, not sure where mine shipped from but it was packed perfectly and came in mint condition. 100% recommended.

Overall good reference book
This is a large oversized reference book featuring logos from late 19th to mid-20th century. There are thousands of logos organized by category and given the large format, the logos are very legible. Each mark lists the year it was designed/introduced, company name, and country. Rarely it will also list the designer. There is very little text to read so it is mostly a visual reference book/library of marks, all in black and white. There are about 10 logos that are given a 4-page feature. These are full-color pages and have a brief body of text followed by photos and graphics showing the evolution of the logo and various applications. Overall this is a high quality book, and while there are a number of these books that catalog thousand of logos/marks, the oversized format of this one makes it a great reference book. Most logo/brand designers will probably want to have this in their library to flip through from time to time. As far as any useful information/context, there’s not much, it’s just a picture book with page after page of logos. What could be much improved is the featured logos. They should have gone into more detail and made them more into case studies and featured even more than just the 10 or so. It’s a nice book but probably not worth the full list price.

the biggest book i've seen
I do tattoos and i invest in the stock market so i was a little curious about the origins of logos and branding, then i found this huge big heavy book !! It is beautiful , well printed , full of archived drawing and logos . This is one of the coolest book i have old in my hands and it is worth the 100 $(canadian) it cost! i had already read in the descriptions on amazon that it was a big book... but i was still super impressed and amazed by it !
