Why are there no pictures showing the side for the apple pencil? i’m curious about the protection there.

They just didn’t show it. There’s a thinner layer of case one that side. It can’t be too thick or it won’t connect to the pencil. It works great.

matte black? Hot use under the sun?

Have not had any over temp problems with my iPad with this cover installed. Yet I do not leave it out under direct sunlight for long periods of time. From my experience with any iPad protector regardless of the color, the the devise will over heat if utilized for long periods of time in ambient temperature that are high and if in direct sunlight for long periods of time.
