Q: what is the actual weight of the knife alone? It doesn't seem like a knife of this size can possible weigh 8.8 ounces

On my kitchen scale: Knife = 4.4 oz Knife & Sheath = 6.1 oz

Q: is the sheath made to be mounted horizontal? i'd like to put it on my back with my belt.

Either way - the leather straps around the front of the knife , follow to the back and is cut so that on the back it's open and runs the length of the sheath also, stiched on one side of the sheath only. You can run a belt under/through it after working it a bit ~it's pretty tight but open. I posted pictures in reviews just now.
