A rash of brutal murders sweeps a quiet rural village where a mysterious stranger just appeared. When the investigating officer watches his daughter fall under the same savage spell, he consults a shaman for answers, unknowingly escalating the situation into something far more dangerous. "CRITIC'S PICK: Echoes of The Exorcist... as the suspense, violence, and worse ratched up, I was not merely scared, but heartbroken." --The New York Times "What makes THE WAILING so unusually disturbing is the almost palpable aura of evil it radiates from calm start to sorrowful finish." --Los Angeles Times "A bone-chilling, thunderous descent into hell" --Twitch Review: Great Asian Horror - Incredible film. Truly thought provoking and horrifying Review: Don't fret, it has subtitles. - The bad reviews are for a previous digital release of this movie. Subtitles have been added and all has been righted. The blu-ray has had subtitles from the get go. I wish some of those people would update their reviews (or desertcart wouldn't lump all reviews together for different versions of the same movie) as this movie deserves a much higher score. The blu-ray is a bit barebones, but it is otherwise a perfectly good release of the movie. If I see the scores balance out I might drop my review a bit, because a movie this good really does deserve more special features. As far as the movie itself (outside of the physical product of the blu-ray), it is a masterpiece of horror well deserving of the acclaim it has received on the film festival circuit. Horror has seen a resurgence in the US, but few of those recent releases display half the nuance and writing chops displayed in Na Hong-jin's The Wailing. Korean directors have demonstrated a strong flair for genre pictures for several years now (The Host, Mother, I Saw the Devil, Snowpiercer), and now with films like The Wailing they're giving Hollywood a serious run for its money on production value. This is a gorgeous movie at all levels. The video and sound are both top notch, and the acting is superb. This is a movie that will revolutionize genre film-making in Korea, and I can't wait to see what other goodies we get from the peninsula in the next few years.

I am glad to have been able to order this DVD through ...
I am glad to have been able to order this DVD through Amazon.Com. I live in a Little Red Dot called Singapore where Korean movies and TV dramas are very popular. Yet, I couldn't find this DVD at DVD shops. I read a newspaper review of the movie and wanted to see it but work commitments got in the way and I missed it. When it comes to horror movies, Korean horror takes a backseat to Japanese horror. The Wailing is one of the better Korean horror movies. Briefly, the story is about a police officer who is called to investigate a series of murders in a rural community. The victims have their bodies mutilated. Plenty of gore for horror fans who want to see a bloody mess. There is a suspect - an old Japanese man who lives alone in the village. The suspicion is later shifted to a strange young woman who is thought to be a witch. So, is it the old Japanese or the young woman? A shaman is called to exorcise whatever demons that are believed to have been unleashed upon the villagers. He's no angel. I will stop here to avoid giving a spoiler. There's an air of mystery over the murders and how these were committed. I like the rural setting. There are creepy moments but, despite the gory scenes, this movie didn't scare the daylights out of me like the Ju-On movies from Japan did. Americans should give this movie a try - get a feel of rural Korea and Korean horror. Want to see something Korean that is really scary? It's not the demon in this movie. The scary one was in my country on 12 June where he shook hands with President Trump.

The Wailing is a far cry from the normal.
A movie actor returns to his mother's estate with friends and loved ones only to find that death awaiting. This a strange and curious combination of the slasher movie and Gothic horror. On the surface, the movie is deceptively sloppy with its crash zooms, underexposed lighting, and the muddy VHS print from which it is ported. The electronic score will only adds to the cheapness. Yet the movie is so determined to pervent the obvious with a false murder, a childhood flashback, a creepy butler, a stormy night, and a rotting castle that you may think that there is more going on than meets the eye. When the classical music of Liszt begins to play that's when the mystery unfolds. Who the this black gloved killer? What is the mother hiding from her son? She seems strangely in love with her son. Are there really satanic forces on the property? How does it pertain to the non fantastic slayings? The foreshadowing and questions are just engaging enough to make the viewer stay for final reveal. Along the way, you'll be treated to some wonderfully excessive nudity and primitive yet arresting violence and trappings. This was made around 1979 or 1980. Expect a certain level of sleaze that can't be replicated with CGI. What makes the story engaging is how there really is link between the seemingly two separate genres. The conclusion is a full blown melodrama with art house aspirations that only filmmaker like Freda could envision. The Black Mass aspect packs a punch and delivers an overall effect that EYES WIDE SHUT and HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES wanted but could never quite muster. This is sure to please fans of Italian horror. If your someone who's wants something just a bit different than a more polished variety than seek this out. It's certainly worth wailing about.

bluray 4k quality is superb
bluray 4k ultra quality is excellent with dolby vision. Very sharp, and deep colors. The only issue as someone else pointed out is that there are credits in the beginning that get english subtitles along with the actual dialog subtitles, so its a lot of text on the screen for the first several minutes. I currently only have a sonos arc with subwoofer, but the audio quality is also excellent, I'll update once I get rear speakers to test the dolby atmos but I'm not an audiophile. I won't do a movie review here, this review is solely for the bluray 4k ultra disc.

Flawless suspenseful horror
I watch a lot of horror movies (and I do mean a lot of horror movies--they're one of my passions), so when I say that this is one of the finest horror films I've seen in recent years, you know that's not empty praise. And in fact this really is one of the finest horror movies I've seen in recent years. It's wonderfully performed, beautifully shot, and amazingly suspenseful throughout. Admittedly, it's a long movie and a bit of a slow burn at times, but none of the slower sequences are ever boring. Rather, they're fascinating as the filmmakers gradually reveal information and provide layer after layer of suspense. And this is genuine suspense. The viewer is never entirely sure what's actually going on. This is, in large part, a tale of suspicion and paranoia and the viewer consistently struggles to know which suspicions are founded and which really are just the products of paranoia. It's not a new cinematic device, but it's used about as well as I've ever seen a movie use it. Similarly, the basic plot and premise of the film will be familiar to horror and thriller fans, but they're rendered perfectly to create that rarest of all entities: a horror movie capable of haunting even the most jaded of horror fans. If you haven't seen this yet, you really owe it to yourself to watch it.

keeps you guessing
Ok so right off, I am avid collector of horror movies. Seen 1000s so horrors so to me it was not in the least bit creepy BUT it was still very good. If you had a hard core horror fan looking for creepy or scary this is not it. It does have heart-pumping scenes just not jump out BOO moments or make your skin crawl moments. Still as a horror fan I really liked it. It keeps you guessing til the very end. Has a few sad moments. Little action and trace comedy. The wow factor for this movie is the twists and turns. trying to figure out what to believe. Warning! You do have to read this movie. It is not in English but subtitles are big and sentences pretty short so you can read with ease.

Amazing movie and transfer.
I don't know what that Vincent69 guy is yapping about calling this a Japanese film when it's clearly Korean, but it truly is an amazing KOREAN film. It deserves to get this gorgeous 4K transfer from Well Go USA. More than worth it.

Una de las mejores peliculas de suspenso asiaticas que he visto
Excelente pelicula. Un poco confusa si uno no esta informado del folklore de aquellas latitudes. Confieso que tuve que entrar a foros para algunas explicaciones.
