Why are the mop heads smaller than the originals? Where can I order those now?

The handle is compatible with the spin mop, and is longer than the original, very strong and durable. Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGXDM98Z/ref=emc_bcc_2_i

How is the old system better even if you add a fresh water bucket from the dollar store?

I am afraid I don't understand your question about the dollar store. And I haven't had the old system. This is the first O-Cedar bucket floor cleaning system I have ever owned but its awesome. The clean and dirty water are separated and the the wringer wrings the water out really well.! Does that help??

This was at 44 dls yesterday; why did rose the price?

It spikes quite often, just keep typing it in the bar sometimes, different merchants, will change price.
