Inhumanity

I feel that this good-sized collection is worth the price, particularly for completionists who are reading it to bridge the gap between Infinity and Original Sin. However, I want to warn those purchasing the Kindle version … the back cover says that it includes Indestructable Hulk #20. It does not. The product description page is correct. It has issue 17-19, but not 20.

SPOILER WARNING: This review reveals an outcome of the Marvel crossover INFINITY.Coming out of the blockbuster crossover INFINITY (which I cannot recommend highly enough) was a subplot about Black Bolt, king of the Inhumans, releasing the mutation-inducing Terrigen Mists into Earth's atmosphere. Consequently, any human being who has inherited any Inhuman DNA from their ancestors is liable at any moment to form a chrysalis and emerge an Inhuman (or, as they will be later called, a NuHuman) with powers (which may or may not be fatal). So now people all over the world are spontaneously forming chrysalises and emerging with powers.My *hope* was that INHUMANITY would flesh out this basic plot somewhat and give an overarching story to it that would draw in the traditional Inhumans and link them to the chaos. No such luck. This volume is just a collection of stories -- dull, brain-wrenchingly stupid stories -- about Marvel heroes having to cope with this new phenomenon. Any actual fleshing out will occur in the follow-up series INHUMAN which, yes, I did buy because I'm a sucker for giving Marvel second and third chances.But, seriously, avoid this book. This book went from my reading list into my "to go" list in record time. Instead, go find an online or local comic shop and pick up the single issues INHUMANITY #1 & #2, and that will give you everything you need as the lead-in to INHUMAN. And you'd better believe I'll be doing a review of INHUMAN when it arrives -- either to warn you away from it, or to reassure you that it was far better than this crap volume. Just do not buy this. (Honestly, go buy EARTH X instead. EARTH X was really good. UNIVERSE X and PARADISE X not so much, especially since PARADISE X's ending got cut short for space reasons and pretty much left the whole series unexplained, but EARTH X by itself is worth the money. I'm wondering if I kept my volume. Hope so. Hate to re-buy things.)

The floating city of Attilan has exploded and is now lying in the Hudson river. It's Terrigen mist has exploded over the earth, revealing a bevy of Inhumans who thought they were human, and who are now being transformed into Inhumans whether they want to or not. Who will save the world from this?Well, the Avengers, Hulk, Iron Man, X-men, Daredevil, etc. will come to the rescue.The problem is, the rescue is so uneven that I never want to read the book again.Avengers Assemble 21 - 25 and Inhumanity were excellent. The Hulk issues were acceptable. But the Uncanny X-Men entry was uncannily bad, Iron Man had Mandarin rings that had achieved sentience (was there no editor to suggest this wasn't a good idea?), and the Superior Spider-Man issue was painful. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this paperback. It's certainly not worth $39.99.The issues collected in this book are only related to the Inhumans tangentially. It leaves the reader feeling a tad fractured. Suddenly, the reader is immersed into another book with another plot that is partially interrupted by the the fall of Attilan plot line. Sadly, it did not leave me wanting more, but less.I would recommend you give this book a thoughtful pass.

This is a big collection, but not that big a payoff.What it’s about: Attilan has been blown up and dumped in Manhattan’s harbor. Black Bolt and his mad brother, Maximus, were the responsible parties and brought down the fabled city in response to Thanos’ attempt to collect a tribute of Inhuman heads, even as he sought his son’s head. Black Bolt countered by using Attilan’s destruction as a catalyst to release a terrigen mist across the earth knowing that there were thousands, even perhaps hundreds of thousands, of humans with Inhuman DNA who would be turned Inhuman. Now Black Bolt and Maximus are gone, presumed dead, and Karnak uncovers the truth of what happened. This is only a small part of this collection. The bulk of it crosses over a variety of books like X-Men and Avengers series and shows how different heroes responded to this event. The best of these IMO were the Incredible Hulk arc and the almost poignant (except that the theme of “you’re okay even though you’re different” has been done to death) Inhumanity: the Awakening which has fun with on-line and virtual narrations, making it very contemporary. It tries to capture, more than any of the other books, what it would be like to be drastically transformed in the blink of an eye.Who’s it for: any Marvel fanboy but those specifically gah gah over all things Inhuman. Others can pass this one up. 3.5 stars

The standalone Karnak is head and shoulders above this. Maybe the thread gets lost with too many characters? Still a good read though.
