An Excellent Field Geology Manual in the Vein of Compton.
Finally, a good, thorough, detailed book covering field mapping techniques and equipment. It is written for students in the UK but clearly applicable to the use in other countries. Having been a field geologist in the past, I have a number of field geology books on my shelf. The last full book Compton's Geology in the Field and Maley's book on field geology. This is a very worthy addition and a real bargain given the material that it contains. While not a "pocket book" like Lisles et al (a worthy book in its own right), it definitely belongs in the field kit for any field camp student or professional needing a good reference book. Definitely recommend.

good reading
I like this book. It is very detailed and seems to address every topic well. The chapter that discusses strike and dip is a bit confusing but it is not an easy subject to put into words. When you learn to do it in the field it will be easy. I am able to do strike and dip but do not ask me to teach it with words! This is well worth the money paid and you will learn a lot. Also good for reference.

Comprehensive updated book of field techniques for geologists
This book has a lot of great illustrations. it's a bit large so I probably won't carry it in my backpack all day long but it will be a handy reference to have in your campsite in the evening.

Decent book, not as good as Compton's.
This is a good book. It is well-organized, has a lot of good info and illustrations. It is, however, NO SUBSTITUTE for Geology in the Field by Compton. This book is almost superfluous next to Compton's.

Should be a big help
Just got it. I am super excited. I know it's gonna be good based on what I have read so far in the introduction. I did a Geology degree back in 2012. Been working as a geologist professionally for almost 10 years but I feel that I need to go back to basics. This will be a big help.

Great field geology guide
I have the paperback and the Kindle versions. Very good advice and pictures. A few too many British examples, but the authors are British, to it's not too surprising.

This book was recommended to me by a trusted fellow OU Earth Sciences student so I bought it sight unseen. Despatch from Amazon was rapid and just skimming the first few pages told me that I had made no mistake. Whilst starting with the basics at no stage did I feel talked down to. The book is well and appropriately illustrated and is in the style of OU Earth Science text books. I cannot now conceive how I have been studying geology for so long without this book. It should be one of the first books any student of geology buys. Congratulations to Angela Coe for producing such a useful tome!

Used it for my year 1 undergrad fieldwork and it came in handy! It explains the fundamentals of what you would be doing for BSc Geology fieldwork.
