I've tried several brands of smoked salt. Some are good, some are mediocre, some are downright awful. This is hands down the best brand of smoked salt I have ever tasted. If you don't have confidence in your ability to season your food, buy this, haha.First off, I really appreciate that the company is transparent about how they smoke their salt. Smoking anything gets controversial if heath is important to you since smoking food often increases levels of certain unwanted or even carcinogenic compounds. It can also degrade micronutrients in food. Salt is a lot more stable than a lot of food that undergoes smoking for flavor enhancement but at the same time, it can absorb a lot of nasties, too. This salt is cold smoked with french oak. TL;DR: Cold smoking is better than using heat, both for you and for flavor.This salt doesn't have the same off-putting "charred" aroma and flavor cheaper smoked salt can have but it's still super potent and strong without smelling and tasting like liquid smoke you'd buy at the grocery store to fake your way to barbeque. If ever you could describe salt as "smooth" and "rich", this would be the stuff to describe that way. I know I'm not writing a wine label or a coffee bean description but seriously, this salt is next level. It's almost buttery! It adds a depth to food that is on the same tier as msg or other sources of umami. I don't use msg ever and I don't barbeque my meat so this salt is magic in a bottle when you're trying to maintain somewhat clean eating but have a husband who is addicted to flavor-enhanced junk food.If you don't eat meat, that's ok. This salt tastes amazing on almost any savory dish from simple vegetables to rice, grains, lentils, beans, tofu, even salad. It's extremely versatile and pairs well with other spices and a variety of cuisines.The base of the grinder is glass and the top/grinder is plastic. I have a bad history with plastic topped grinders because every one I have bought breaks or stops grinding properly after a short time. This top feels very well made despite being plastic and so far, it has performed without a hitch. It grinds smoothly and delivers an even amount of salt.

Salt and Pepper are the cornerstones to almost every meal that finds its way to a hungry mouth... So, when you can find a variant that helps to add a little extra oomph, it is always a nice surprise.The grinder itself is quite nice - very nice weight, ceramic based (so it will last!), refillable, and creates a perfect and even grind to the salt.Upon opening it, I was a little taken back by just how smoky the aroma was... In fact - was a bit worried that it would be overpowering for some of the dishes I was planning... but definitely was not the case. The salt itself is quite strong, I find that I can back down on most recipes and the saltiness shines through. It almost has a slight bitterness to it (in a good way!). The smokiness is subtle in its flavor when mixed with other ingredients... but, oh my... it can REALLY change the feeling of your dish.One of my favorite applications has been to add this to pan seared steaks... I also absolutely love this on vegetables (especially an updated Mexican street corn recipe).At first glance, it might seem a bit pricey (just under $10 for a smallish grinder)... but I would consider this a specialty seasoning that would not be used for every meal... So... when I think of it that way... it is right in line with a lot of the other seasonings I see in my spice rack.I am so glad to have found this as it truly does add a special touch to 'routine' cooking... and I think it will easily become a pantry staple for my household!

It's common for people to say "salt is salt". But it's not! Sea salt comes from ocean water, which is exposed to pollutants and such. Desert salt comes from deserts (obviously) with less exposure to pollutants. And Kalahari desert salt specifically comes from renewable deposits deep beneath the Earth. It has a greater concentration of minerals, and you can really taste the difference.We were already fans of Oryx Desert Salt, so we just had to try their Smoked Desert Salt! The first thing we do when trying a new salt is to taste it. Just the salt, all by itself. This one is another winner, with a smoked taste that isn't overbearing or "forced".This grinder is nice because it's refillable, though it doesn't appear to allow you to change the size of the grind. Of course, maybe we just haven't figured that out yet. I will update if we've missed this point.This is a good product especially for those would like to refine their understanding and appreciation for different types of salt, and who enjoy a quality smoked salt without a "fake" taste.Bottom line: Excellent product from a clean, renewable source at a very good price.
