Mastering Street Photography is a practical guide to capturing the candid moments that reveal life at its most dramatic, absurd or beautiful. Street photography has a tradition dating back over a century, and today's digital world finds it enjoying a renaissanceโyet there is little expert advice available. This is a practical guide to capturing the candid moments that reveal life at its most dramatic, absurd, or beautiful. Brian Lloyd Duckett demonstrates how the successful street photographer needs to be an unseen observer, with the camera a mirror of everyday scenes and unaware subjects. A guide to equipment and technical skills leads into lessons in finding inspiration, developing projects, and composing different subjects and scenesโlaying the foundations for you to impose your personality on your photography and develop your own distinctive style. The book also addresses such key issues as staying safe and within the law when photographing on the street, and the art of building an audience for your images. Street Photography - UK Style!
This is a fun book, aimed at beginners to the genre, which introduces the basic principles of street photography and emphasizes shooting and philosophy over technique and postwork. This is a smart approach, because street photography is one of those genres in which experience itself is the best teacher, and too much emphasis on technique and postwork runs the risk of creating artwork that looks polished but is not really well-thought-out. The book is structured around topics with occasional "assignments" or activities to complete, as if you are taking a tutorial with Duckett. All the pictures (unless I am wrong) are drawn from Duckett's own work. So, if you're expecting samples of other photographers' work, you are out of luck. However, Duckett does mention several other photographers in his text which should give you some pointers on who to research if you want to know more. (I wish there were more animal photography here, as the cover photo is one of the best I've seen of a curious pup!) I was happy to see that both ethics and legal aspects of taking and publishing street photography are introduced here, as this is precisely the areas that are the riskiest for street photographers. Duckett is a UK-based photographer, so while much of his advice is specific to modern-day Britain, he never over-reaches his expertise. This is a useful book if you're already an intermediate photographer, have mastered your basics, and are ready to explore the more improvised genre of street photography. I've enjoyed this book a lot, and recommend it to anyone looking for some inspiration from the streets.

Instructive text weakened by uninspiring images.
Duck Duckett is an intelligent, lucid instructor fully conversant with his subject. The book itself is well structured and printed to a high standard. Rather than offering the reader mastery of street photography, it delivers a beginner's guide to the subject, satisfactory though that is in many ways. The images used as examplars do not inspire in the same way that the text does.
