Can you still put ice in this cooler to keep things cold when not plugged in ?

Yes you can put ice in this cooler, but it must be in sealed containers or water will get into the fan port. I use frozen water bottles to maintain cold overnight.

Plug gets extremely hot, can you help?

I can’t really help, but will ask the question: is the outlet that you’re plugging it into in good condition? Make sure that it’s clean on the inside of the plug see the firmly. If it is still heading up, it means the product is defective.
