Will the exhaust of a generator open the louvers?

NO! The exhaust air flow from a generator will be too concentrated. Air flow to open louver is 18 inches diameter. Carbon monoxide is poisonous!

which size would you recommend for installing between studs that are 16" on center?

It is difficult to answer not seeing what you are doing. The 14in is 17 3/4 inch outer, so if you truly have 16 in center you should have 16 inch opening between studs which would give you little over 1/2 inch of fan frame to reach and attach to both studs.. So you may have to drill holes through the side metal frame . The 12in shutter would be to small IF you are wanting to reach both studs. The 16in shutter is to big to fit between studs by 1/2 inch, and you do not want to cut studs. good luck

I need one that mounts on the outside of the structure (framed in after mounting). this one mounts on the inside to open out. is there another option?

If you are going to use this unit for venting outwards you can mount it on the outside and the louvers will still move outwards. I mounted mine on the outside and I don't see how you can get it backwards.

Instead of a fan can I use an electric motor to ope and close?

No, there is no linkage to connect a motor.
