Liquitex 104016 BASICS Gesso Surface Prep Medium, 16-oz

I purchased this white gesso mostly for painting rocks, but I also use it for other painting projects like small wood decor pieces and other craft surfaces. This is the gesso color I use most often because it gives me a clean white starting point and helps cover the natural background of the rock or surface underneath. What I like: • Great primer/base coat for rock painting • Gives me a smooth white surface to start from • Covers the natural background of the rock well • Very useful under white or other light solid colors • Helpful when I want paint colors to look brighter • Good for rocks, concrete, brick, wood, and small decor projects • Goes on nice and thick • Has great coverage • Dries nicely and fairly quickly • Dries with a flat/matte paint-like finish • Creates a clean, non-shiny white base for painting • Dries more like regular paint for me • I have not noticed tackiness once it dries • Makes a good base for bright colors and detailed designs • Useful when I do not want the original surface color showing through • Looks nice even as a simple white base • Works well under either a glossy or matte clear coat • Very handy to keep with painting and craft supplies Things to be aware of: • White is best when you want a clean, bright background • I use white under white or lighter colors so the final color shows up better • If you want the natural rock or wood grain to show, clear gesso is the better choice • If you want a dark background or are using darker colors, black gesso may be better • I still use a glossy or matte clear coat over my finished gesso projects • I would let the gesso dry fully before painting over it or sealing it • Like most primers, coverage can depend on the surface and how much you apply Overall: This white gesso is the one I use most often for rock painting because it gives me a clean, smooth white base to work from. I buy this on repeat for my acrylic paintings. I prefer this type of bottle as it seals well between uses and is easy to pour out onto my paintings. It brings out the vibrancy of the colors and provides a finishing touch. Good product!

Works good I do wish it was a little thicker

As a budget item, it performs as it should. The coverage is good and like the regular gesso, will require layers. I'd say more than the brands regular gesso. There is a strong smell that isn't a deal breaker for me. Just thought I'd caution those of you with smell sensitivities. To me, it's thin, but not watery and it pours out smoothly. It's great for applying a thin layer over collage. For painting, it provides a nice smooth surface. 4 stars only due to the smell.

Does a great job of preparing canvases

Nice big bottle for the price. Coats very well. Leaves a somewhat rough but flat surface for more application

Great product! Learning my way around painting and got into build my own canvas and this is a must have. Used up about half of a bottle already. It's very therapeutic to toss it on a old or new canvas that needs to be smoothed over. You can even use a putty knife with how thick it is.

I love liquitex, great quality acrylics. This gesso works great! I use a water spray bottle from the Greg Craola Simkins technique and the gesso dries evenly. Great product.
