Never Look Away: A Thriller

This book is one from my own personal book shelf. Linwood Barclay has a new book coming out in April which I have ready to read and review courtesy of Netgalley. I love Linwood's books so much that I try to keep some in reserve, so I decided it was time to read this one, as I know I have the pleasure of a new one in weeks to come. Only gripe I have is that these books are not numbered and you have no way of knowing which ones to read first, so I had read Broken Promise the book that follows this one, and knew that something had happened to David Harwood's wife Jan but not what. I'm still confused why that book is called Broken Promise Falls #1. Maybe that is all part of some bigger scheme on Linwood's part. Putting all that aside, the plot was as usual fantastic. Yes some of it is a little unbelievable but as they say "truth is often stranger than fiction". Near the beginning of the book David sets out to look for his wife, and something he uncovers made me literally gasp out loud, and yet again there it was - the hook.. So many little subtleties that start to stack up, you are thinking "how is it ever going to come together?", but as always it does. The book did have me wondering would there be any way out for David? It is difficult to review this genre without giving away spoilers. All I can say is that to me Linwood is the master of this genre - I've never read a bad one yet - bring on the next one........ I'm giving this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Encore un excellent Lindwood Barclay. Encore une fois, un homme ordinaire, un brave type, un père de famille heureux dont l'univers va d'un seul coup basculer, va devoir lutter, trouver en lui-même des ressources insoupçonnées pour se disculper du crime dont on l'accuse et protéger son enfant, alors qu'un véritable étau se resserre sur lui. Mais "Never look away" a aussi un côté plus trouble. On abandonne le courant de conscience du sympathique narrateur pour partager celui de sa femme disparue et le malaise s'installe car elle n'est pas celle que l'on croyait. Pas du tout! Comment peut-on à ce point avoir porté un masque, avoir usurpé une identité, une vie? Parmi les autres personnages du livre, les parents du narrateur forment un couple attachant que l'on rencontre rarement dans la fiction criminelle. Ils symbolisent la normalité, l'affection familiale et seront pour leur fils un indéfectible soutien. Et puis il y a quelques personnages secondaires poignants tels cet autre couple, ces parents dont qui ont perdu leur petite fille et ne s'en sont jamais remis, ou glaçants tel ce tueur implacable qui néanmoins se fait du souci pour son chat. Comme pour les autre romans de Lindwood Barclay, les personnages de "Never Look Away" vous restent dans la tête longtemps après avoir refermé le livre et le récit vous tient en haleine jusqu'à la dernière ligne.

ネタバレさせずに感想を書くのはちと難しい。 もうお一人のレビュワーの方が全体的なストーリーの流れを記述されていますので、話の内容はこちらを参照していただきたいと思います。 被害者であったはずの主人公が、捜査が進むにつれ加害者の疑いをもたれていく。妻の過去を調べていくうちに「秘密」がだんだんと見えてくる。 そこには行方不明になった妻のとんでもない綿密な「計画」が隠されていた、、、、。 スピード感も、なぞ解きの面白さもある優れたエンターテインメント小説ですが、最後の30ページは失速気味かな。 エンディングはもっと違った展開を期待していたのですが、まぁ、「秘密」を考えると無理もないか。でも、やっぱりあの乱暴な終わり方はないよね。 この小説の場合、ハッピーエンドにはならないにせよ、もっと違った終わり方もあったんじゃないだろうか。 説明不足も目立ちます。そもそもの○○襲撃の背景や、密買屋との接点、パートナーとの連絡方法などちょっと大雑把であったり、全く説明が無かったり。 一人称で語られる章と三人称で語られる章がほぼほぼ交互に出てくるスタイルの小説ですので、初心者にも読みやすいペーパーバック。スピードリーディングにオススメ。

Excellent book by an excellent writer. Never a dull moment.
