This is her best album without a doubt.With the exception of one song that I’m not mad about all are very good.All tracks on my vinyl copy played perfectly until the very last on the second side which has background rumbling and slight distortion. A clean on my rcm made no difference so I have ordered a replacement. This would definitely be a five star review if this fault was not there. If the replacement is good it will be upgraded. This is the second recent vinyl album that has been delivered purely inside a large envelope which gives no protection and renders them liable to damage whilst in transit. No other record retailer would send out records without protective packaging. Update Replacement received but the background rumbling is still there and now on several tracks and even between then. I decided to replace it again but this time with the Moonlight edition. Much much better.

I’m not going to say that I’ve been a TS fan since her debut…but I’ve never had anything against her either. Yeah she’s a pop star, but there is something about her that just screams integrity and here for more than entertainment to me. I know exactly when I became a fan…it was the weekend after 1989 was released. My gf at the time loved her and always bought her albums upon debut. That weekend we were on vacation and she needed music to fall asleep. She played that album on repeat every night over that holiday weekend and I’m a night owl that never fell asleep right away. It must have seeped into my unconscious because come the next day I knew all the words and melodies to each song! Ever since then I’ve been a fan without shame. I cannot say that I love her radio songs, not that they are bad but sometimes come off too pop-ish, formulaic, and cheesy in my humble opinion. I know I’m reviewing her more than the album but I rant…and one thing I can say regarding TS is that she is a true songwriter and musician. Not to mention performer. There are songs that are so deeply emotional that it’s hard to not feel or relate to her. That I will say is true with Midnights. I love this album start to finish, but often have a hard time not going down the rabbit hole after it builds to “You’re on your own kid” and then I just repeat that song. I feel like I can see my own life and events both big and small flash before my eyes during that 4 minute absolutely perfect song. It builds into something beyond life, love, feeling, memory, optimism, regret, hope, disappointment, and courage to keep going in my opinion. I often feel like I can relate to her lyrics (co-written or not) there is a sense of empathy for an utter stranger and complete opposite that I see of myself and taste in music. I do think that midnights is an amazing work of art, and another timeless album that will be here long after me or even TS herself. That’s where I think her music is different than other pop stars. It will remain relevant for decades to come. But I might just be insane so take with this what you want.

If you’re still debating to get it, I’m here to say do it. The album on its own is flawless, but the vinyl is just beautiful, aesthetically pleasing and when you walk in the room it makes the whole place shimmer 😉
