Kidde Carbon Monoxide Detector, Plug-In with 9V Battery Backup, Digital Display, 85 dB Alarm, LED Status Light Indicators, 3rd Edition

We bought this carbon monoxide monitor as we are renovating an older house and have aging appliances not yet replaced. The monitor arrived in a timely manner and it was easy to install the back up battery. After reading other reviews I checked the date on our unit and it was made just a few months ago. It came with good and easy to follow instructions. The plug and cord are neatly house at the back of the unit, so if you have a close electrical outlet you can just plug it in. If not, the cord unravels and you can plug it in further away from the appliances. (just don't have it too far away or it may not be as effective in the case of a CO leak). We have had the unit for a few weeks now and it has constantly measured "0" (parts per million - ppm). Because the unit doesn't alarm for readings below 35 ppm, there is a button you can press to check if there have been any lower-level readings detected. Again, for us, when we checked through this function it also always read "0". We finally asked ourselves......does this unit even work?!! Well we found a way to check it out, and indeed, the unit does work very well. My husband took the unit to the garage, and then drove our car into the garage, turned off the engine and shut the door down. He waited a minute or less and the unit indeed detected a small amount of CO (15ppm - see picture). Because it was under 35 ppm, the unit did not alarm, but at least we now know it really does work. I would never suggest you try to check your unit by running your car in a closed garage. We were just measuring the fumes from an engine that was switched off, just as if you came home, parked and turned off your car, got out and shut the garage door. We are very happy with how the Kiddie Nighthawk CO detector works and are very glad to have it in our home - great peace of mind from a great product that we wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others.

Quality Kidde brand CO detector. I replaced my original one with this identical one after 10 years of service, when it finally beeped and showed "END" in the display, which renders it useless, which is by design. Ironically, I never had any CO issues or alerts, until about a few months before its 10th anniversary in service. My home's natural gas boiler was over 25 years old, and begin leaking CO from incomplete combustion issues. This Kidde CO detector audibly alerted me and displayed the current CO level as well as the maximum CO level that it had recorded. Very simple to use and displays basic, yet useful information. I was able to open the windows and ventilate my house to prevent the excess CO buildup from harming us, thanks to this CO detectors audible & visual alerts. Hope they're still making this model 10 years from now, when I will need another one, or if I decide to move and want to purchase a new one. It's certainly not the cheapest CO unit on the market, but it's a good value for the money. Oh, it plugs directly into any standard 110-volt power outlet and it has a 9-volt battery backup, battery included. Although they recommend you replace the 9V backup battery every few years, I never replaced mine, and it was still almost as good as the day it was installed. My Kidde CO detector is plugged into an outlet in our upstairs hallway just outside of our bedroom. Fortunately, it also fit perfectly next to (below) my plug-in doorbell, which was a huge plus! I'm planning on installing one in the basement, near the gas boiler as well. Should have done that years ago, as we would have likely received an earlier "heads-up" that there was a combustion problem with the boiler. One last note: You can remote wall-mount this unit also. Cool feature! If you look at the last picture that I posted with this review, you can see that when the rear access cover is removed to access the backup battery, there is extra cord stored on the opposite side of the battery. The connected main power source plug can be easily removed and relocated/extended, via the corded connection, in order to have the CO detector located somewhere other than directly plugged into the power source. There is also a handy little clear plastic packet included, containing two wood/mounting screws and two wall mount plastic expanding inserts. (Not shown in picture.) Just can't say enough good stuff about this unit. Very pleased with it!

I purchased the Kidde Carbon Monoxide Detector for my home to replace another unit that had expired. The Kidde Detector plug-in design with a 9-volt battery backup is very convenient & easy to use. It offers continuous protection even during power outages. The digital LED display clearly shows CO levels, which is helpful for peace of mind. Unit came ready to use, with battery already installed. We just pluged it in and it was ready to use. We feel confident that our family has chosen a great carbon monoxide detector for our home.

I bought this Kidde carbon monoxide detector because my wife is pregnant, and getting ready for a baby has made me think a lot more about safety around the house. I wanted something simple, reliable, and with a digital display so I could actually see readings instead of just relying on an alarm. Setup was straightforward — plugged it in, installed the backup battery, and it was ready in minutes. I like that it has a digital screen and peak level button since it gives more information than basic detectors. The battery backup is also reassuring in case power goes out. The size is reasonable and it doesn’t stick way out from the wall. Alarm volume seems loud enough to hear throughout the house. I can’t speak to long-term durability yet, but first impressions are positive. If you want a straightforward carbon monoxide detector with a display and battery backup, this seems like a solid option.

Upon recommendation for ability, and the fact our current CO detector is pushing seven during renovations. It attaches to the ceiling. Figured replacement early based on quality of function for new device and huge savings to buy two as singles if worth it. As vintage ceiling tile are being installed and this device is flexible as to where it sets up. Can be plugged in with the back up battery or wall mounted with battery alone. Although it’s a bit large has a keen sense of detection. There’s no price or device size that matters with safety. But if ya can score a discount kudos. No matter what detector you buy make sure it has a digital read on how much CO2 is invading when it does. To know what’s safe … 0 😁 all seriousness, under 30. The booklet explains the levels. How the device will function in a warning situation. Symptoms o look out for. How long it’ll take to read CO2 depending on how severe it is. It’s recommended to take one on trips when staying at hotels and this detector is easy to set up anywhere. The two pronged action is helpful since this vintage house has a mix of two and three. But for a trip the 9 volt battery is good to go. For RVers this is a must have. Even in a van camping. Better to be safe than sorry. Tip: Write the date of install in permanent marker on the face. This way no need to remember. Tip 2: Same with smoke and fire detectors. For those , what I do is write the yr and month the battery is changed every time. Thin permanent marker should leave plenty of room. Unless hardwired and in ten you just emplacements it. Still, add the date of install. Same with fire extinguishers. Doesn’t hurt to have the fire department inspect it periodically. I know people who’ve lost their hem to fire. Not fun. I know people, like myself, a CO detector got us outta the house. What I like about this detector is the directions have great specifics for set up to avoid false positives and a freak out. Yeah, I did. It was scary. Thank goodness the two times it was for real we were safe. Though at that time we didn’t have a level readout. That’s what makes this gem such a peace. Not sure how long the sale is for. But the singles are a great price now. Hope you score a savings, too. Hope I never hear these defectors go off. But I feel save knowing new ones are in place every ten or less years, if your renovating, where to restock 😊

Worked very well

So I got this because I liked that it was digital and a plug in but with a battery back-up just in case the power goes out. I understand that there may be minute traces of CO in a house but so long as they are not dangerously high, all is well. So I expected the digital readout to show me at least SOME level of CO but it always read zero. So I started to question if it really worked as it should. Yes I pressed the "test" button but that doesn't tell me if it's actually detecting CO. Well that all changed one day when I was woken out of my sleep by a LOUD alarm I had never heard before going off. It was so loud, I thought it was coming from outside. I stumbled around my house trying to figure out where it was coming from and that's when I saw my digital Kiddie CO detector of which I had previously been skeptical, showing that the CO in the house was at 158 parts per million! I had never experienced a CO issue before so you can't imagine the sense of dread that washed over me. It was like one of those zoom in panic scenes in the movies. At this point, I'm wondering if I'm actually going to make it to the door to get out. *Spoiler alert* I did in fact make it out, because my digital Kiddie CO detector alerted me well before the CO levels reached death levels. I mean no amount is really good but it didn't wait until the levels were high enough to kill me in 5 minutes. Fire department investigated (as I stood outside in my pajamas) and determined the CO was coming from my furnace so the shut it down. Later the HVAC company discovered it was a cracked heat exchange on my 20 year old furnace. It was well past time for a replacement. Had it not been for my Kiddie, I would not have woken up that morning. That gives me a bit of a chill just thinking about it and now I'm a walking public service announcement for the advocacy of using carbon monoxide detectors, so test yours regularly and check your dang on batteries! Thanks Kiddie! And yes, I strongly recommend this detector.

I'm 75, and I've owned several generations of fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide detectors in the past 40 years in my house. The current Kidde Carbon Monoxide Detector in my opinion is a distinct improvement over the over my previous carbon monoxide detectors for a number of reasons: 1. Location: The unit can be plugged into any outlet or run off a 5' power cord and set on a counter top. Despite folklore that carbon monoxide is heavier than air or lighter and rises, carbon monoxide is actually fairly close to room air in weight and thus tends to diffuse throughout the room and the house. As a result, I plug my Kidde detectors into low level electrical outlets, well outlets over kitchen counters, and in the basement into a ceiling outlet. 2. Dependability: The unit runs on AC with a battery backup and a long life-span from a top manufacturer. 3. Monitoring: The unit continuously monitors carbon monoxide with a display that I can read from across the room. The unit also emembers past peak incidents. 4. Alarm: The alarm is loud and persistent. 5. Style: So many units look cheesy, like they are Pac Man vintage odd shapes, lettering, embosses, etc. I remodeled my house and I winced at the contrast between the new clean lines of the interior refurbishment and the dorky look of my old carbon monoxide detectors. The Kidde unit looks modern--a clean white rectangle with subdued buttons and window for the data display. Some people want units that talk to each other, float across the ether via the internet, etc. Hey people. We are dealing with carbon monoxide! The house isn't going to burn down. The alarm is loud enough to be hear throughout the house. Pay less, and have less complexity to go wrong. Keep it simple for carbon monoxide detectors.

I have a boiler in one of the bed rooms so thought it was important to have a good alarm .put battery in plugged it in .Reading came up as "0".The next morning it did intermittent bleep I went to check it the battery was flat the plug was red hot ,fire hazard so I sent it back cost me £12.75 to send it to Spain !!!
