is it safe to use a heavy duty extension cord with this product?

It says in the ad that you should not use an extension cord but I must admit that I have mine connected to one because I did not have an outlet close to where I wanted it. I only turn mine on when I am going to be sitting close by.

If placed on a fireplace, I would like to hide the cable. Any recommendations?

I'd like to hang mini stockings and a mini nutcracker on top but don't want it to be a hazard. Does the top of the unit or outside get hot?
